Exciting and inspiring Tasmanian communities through arts and culture

The Western Wilderness

Any name with wilderness in it must surely exhilarate, and with the start of this journey came imaginings of wild people matched perfectly to their place. I could barely tear myself away from a surprise gem en route, Ol’ Jacks Cafe & Gallery, at Rosebery, with the deliciously healthy food and brewing coffee. Local photographer Kerrie Maguire talked me through her intriguing images, altered pictures from the natural world around her.

The bright curious exterior of LARQ studio gallery contrasted with the gentle greeting by artist Raymond Arnold. I sipped my water quietly so as not to disturb his captivating conversation about printmaking and landscape interaction, and lingered for as long as
I could. Time for a dash of lively banter with Ivan Stringer at Art Frontier gallery, before a leisurely stroll down one more block to the piece de resistance in chic regional cinema. Sucking in the Art Deco, easing into a couch and sneaking my toes onto the edge of the
coffee table, I revelled in A Brief History Of This Spot, showing daily at The Paragon Theatre.

I have never aspired to act, but I meowed, scratched and clawed my fingers through the air as Tom the cat, complete with fluffy ears, in The Ship That Never Was. Plucked from the audience, thrust on stage and directed live by writer and actor Richard Davey, this is one debut I’ll never forget! No doubt my performance contributed to this hilarious drama, Australian’s longest running play by The Round Earth Company.
