Hobart and Surrounds

Chock-a-block full of creative culture, pockets tucked into peninsulas, thriving creative villages, and the ‘big city’ jam packed to the rafters, that’s what you can expect in this southerly direction. Strolling around heritage streets on foot is one of my favourite pastimes, and Richmond is perfect for such an outing. Spoilt for choices, from local artists co-ops to the impressive Saddlers Court Gallery, I didn’t doubt for a minute their claim of stocking the work of 100 Tasmanian artists.

If you’ve never before known love of the awakening kind, take the first opportunity you can for a dose of installation inspiration. I set off on my second experience of this phenomenon in as many months at Fleurtys at Birches Bay. Resident artist Wendy Edwards sat chatting in the sunshine while placing her mosaics, and happily pointed me in the right direction. As I made my way around the property I imagined collecting, designing and making; I wanted to stay and put down roots. I was off in a world of my own, at one with sculpture and earth!

Let’s discard the H-o-b, and call this place Art. No matter which way I looked, every streetscape and space housed something expressed, designed, created or made. I walked and wondered, I zipped around Hobart town, from one contemporary gallery to another, from artists’ co-op studio to designer handmade store, exhibition space and back. I took in one artistic shot followed by the next, until I was pleasantly spent.
