Performing arts touring

Tasmanian Regional Arts also supports regional communities to access quality performing arts touring.

Theatre, music, dance, comedy and puppetry performances have always proven popular with regional audiences. From 2008 TRA has continued to support touring productions in collaboration with a range of performing arts companies, festivals and government agencies.

In 2007 TRA changed the way that it supports performing arts touring in response to funding agency requirements. These changes see TRA operate more as a broker of tours. This change has allowed TRA to develop new partnership opportunities with organisations such as Ten Days on the Island and Tasmania Performs. Through this brokerage model, TRA now works with its partners and its branch network capacity to create partnerships with local government, community groups and local sponsors that will lead to greater local determination in regional product selection.

In April 2010 TRA hosted 5 screenings by Little Big Shots International Kids Film Festival with floor talks by Festival Director from Melbourne, Chloe Boulton. www.littlebigshots.com.au

July will bring performances by the Harrambee choir at St Marys on Mon 5th and Swansea on Tues 6th as they travel to hobart for Festival of Voices. www.festivalofvoices.com

Virtuoso guitarist Bruce Mathiske will perform his sensational "Sizzling Strings" show at Burnie's Arts & Function Centre, Devonport Jazz and regional performances including Deloraine on Friday 23rd July. www.mathiske.com.au

Tasmania's own Silkweed will tour their tribute to Lady Jane Franklin "An Examined Life" to 6 regional venues from October 30th to Nov 7th 2010 www.silkweed.com.au

Sheyana: Maps of the Soul will feature Penguin based singer/songwriter Sheyana with guitarist Scott Mainwaring in regional performances in late 2010. www.sheyana.com

TRA will again collaborate with Tasmania Performs hosting "Sex, death & a cup of tea" this year, whilst initiating a new partnership with the Tasmanian Writers Centre touring workshops to regional centres.

While smaller, TRA’s touring of performing arts program is selected in a similar manner to its visual arts and crafts program. Artists and companies with potential product under development should discuss touring opportunities with TRA.
