Launceston, Tamar and the North
1842 art gallery may well have been where this all started. Conveniently situated just across the road from my day job, I’ve come to know its owner, Robyn Jones, well. She’s the one I proudly boast of as the local historian amongst my friends, and Trevor Jones, her partner, is the fine furniture maker. I often walk around their gallery basking in the scent of timber, and the collection of art they hang on the walls. I dream of taking one of Trevor’s tables home one day, where I can run my fingertips over it as often as I please.
Being the first of my journeys and the closest to home, I struck out from there in a web-like fashion from the hub, taking day trips in singles and multiples. I launched myself into the creative mecca that is Deloraine via Nancy Kowalski, at Artifakt Gallery. Nancy spoke with discerning passion of the highly professional artists and designers emerging in our midst, and I departed with a sneaking suspicion that from this day forth I would speak on the same subject with unrestricted bravado!
‘Are you John?’, I had to ask on another of my excursions. I couldn’t quite grasp that John Temple, the man responsible for that multitude of stunning Australian landscape images, would be at the gallery, in the flesh, to greet me. John made us coffee and we sat like old friends across his cafe table. Following the obligatory career summation, he had me exactly where he wanted me; relaxed, disarmed and primed, for a debate on national politics, the environment and immigration!
