The East Coast and Flinders Island

banner

You will see much more than sandy beaches on this East Coast. Although tucked in an unassuming building off the street, when I walked in to the Suncoast Gallery at St Helens I couldn’t get away! With every step I took I saw something new and original. From kelp sculpture, grapevine and seaweed baskets, to knitted creatures and silk handbags, the plethora of handmade pieces in traditional or contemporary craft kept me intrigued for hours.

It was peacefully quiet when I arrived, but this place is for music makers and other creative types. Natasha Lowe and Belinda Schaeffer sat downstairs making art at the Big Shed Studios, while I wandered through the gallery upstairs. By the time I left, I was ready to book a space, take a class, hold a party, record a song and pencil a nude, all in one afternoon! It’s art they offer, but I wanted to move in, and as I continued down the highway I dreamed the details of my relocation!

I’ve never before thought of art as dangerous goods, but perhaps Rita Summers, licensed for just that, knows something I don’t. Where else can you fill up on gas, buy a new shed, and learn a new craft? Rita warmly welcomed me, we chatted excitedly about getting more people into art, and I soon fell in love! But her partner Ian Summers need not worry; it’s Rita’s pen drawings with text that I desire. And I longed to sit at the big table with her and the crew for a quiet night in, with the crafty community at Gone Rustic in St Mary’s.
